Your Journey to Amazing Children and Family Portraits

your journey words 1

When was the last time you updated your portraits? Children grow so fast and change so quickly and it is important to capture every moment in between.

Many people get overwhelmed when it comes to portraits. I can totally understand why but am hoping to walk you through it and make it less stressful and dare I say, FUN!

Here are some common excuses for putting off family portraits and my responses to them.

* I need to lose “x” pounds first.

My response: Your children do not see those extra pounds. They love you for who you are and will love seeing your family as a unit on the walls at home. You will be so happy after you do it and will notice the smiles and fun had instead of seeing those “extra pounds.”

* I don’t have time.

My response: We are all busy and live crazy lives, especially those of us with kids. It is hard to fit things into the schedule and I get that. My house is definitely a “changing of the guards” or an ” on the go all of the time” household. At the same time, we have to put portraits as a priority and cut other things out sometimes. A portrait session only takes 30-90 minutes of our time (more for newborns) and the rewards are so worth getting it on the calendar even if you have to move some things around. You don’t want to wake up two years (or 10 years!) later and think, “We never got a portrait of that face that Child 2 always used to make when he got really excited.” You don’t want to miss out on those family portraits, because I’m telling you, even if I don’t always like how I look in our family portraits, they make me smile just seeing us on the wall happy together. When the kids are fighting, I’m exhausted, the winter feels like it will never end and the list goes on, I look at our portraits and feel happy!

* It is too expensive.

My response: Custom portraiture is an investment. Each photographer has their own pricing and it is important to choose the photographer that best fits your style. Sometimes we have to save up for things we really want. Taking a family vacation is expensive, but we save our money to do it. Why? Because it provides memories for us to keep forever. Custom portraiture is the same way, it not only provides those memories during the session but it also preserves those memories to keep and look back at forever. It really is a priceless gift! Find a way to cut back or do without things you don’t need for awhile and make it happen!

* The kids won’t behave.

My response: Professional children photographers know how to handle children. It is what we do! Let us worry about your children. Don’t let the possibility that they might be a little energetic during the session hold you back because that makes it all more fun!

* I never like how I look in the pictures.

My response: Talk to your photographer ahead of the session about what you do and don’t like about yourself in past photographs. Maybe there are poses you don’t like, colors you shouldn’t wear, or more flattering angles to make your best features shine! We’ll work together to make sure you look your best!

Browse through our featured galleries, maternity, newborns, children or family. You can also use the “category” drop down menu at the bottom of the website to view many blog posts dedicated to the lovely families we photograph. If you want more samples, take a jump over to our Facebook page and view our most current work there.

My style is modern but natural. I never like to include any poses or props that look out of place or uncomfortable. My goal is to create a fun environment for my clients in which organic personalities and relationships show through. You will see some posed images in my work but my favorites are the ones where people are laughing, in motion, and generally don’t know I’m there. It is a combination of posed and lifestyle that I prefer. I have a lot of patience with the little ones and many methods of working even with the most shy or energetic children.
